Final Project Artist Statment

For our final project, we had to use real life objects and projection mapping to create a story or a narrative or your choice. For my final project I decided I wanted to lean into my Brainstorm that I had created. It talked about Housing Insecurity and Housing instability that low income families have to face. Not being able to know where they are sleeping and where they are sheelting for the day and night. To create this I wanted to create a fort, this was inspired by the FLorida project because of the little girl. Kids are known to want to create forts when they are little because it's their own little space to take. I created a fort and added housing insecurity. I did this by having a white blanket, to allow me to project my videos onto, a broom stick that holds up the white blanket to make it look more like a tent/fort. I had two chairs on the side to support the white blanket and had used my own clothes to cover up the noticeable chairs. I collected cardboard and cardboard paper to use as a soft ground. I had various objects like cups, mugs, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, pillows, etc to show someone living in the fort. Another thing I had added was mcdonalds bags and cups to emphasize eating very low quality food that low income families usually eat because they are unable to have access to healthy food. For my projections I layered three videos on the white background to show a wall and scratchy effect, this shows instability and uncomfortability. On the toilet paper I added cockroaches to show the unsanitary environment, on the mcdonalds bags I added fresh fruit and vegetables to contrast to the low quality food. Lastly I had a doll house that had a projection on fire and added an eviction notice to further sell the point. My installation was a success for me because other classmates told me that mutuals thought there was a homeless person Outside which was only me. I believe it created the narrative I wanted. Something I would change next time is to add a path to my installation so more people can look at it.
